Why wear Earplugs?
If you spend time in the water you need earplugs.
Well fitting earplugs eliminate the retention of water in the ear canal that can be so hard to get rid of. This retained water can cause ear infections.
Swimmers ear; causes thickening of the skin in the ear canal causing water that goes in to stay in. wearing earplugs helps prevent the water retention and the resultant irritation and infection (more on swimmers ear)
Surfers ear; (extosis) is thought to be caused by the cooling effect the outer ear has on the ear canal. This causes a thickening of the bones in the ear canal and can result in complete closure after even few years. The operation to correct this is extremely painful and results in months out of the water. Wearing earplugs can prevent surfers ear. Those with already affected ears can reverse the bone growth by making sure they protect thier ears by wearing earplugs when surfing / windsurfing. (More on surfers ear)
